It’s hard to believe this was written so long ago. Dale Carnegie retells stories of his past pupils and experiences. Obviously, such a book will not appeal to everyone due to its colloquial nature of second-hand “this is what happened when I tried this” stories. I mean, for me, I have had a little bit of a learning experience from How to Win Friends and Influence People. It has opened my eyes, and I did find myself agreeing with what was said and all the testimonies.
How to Win Friends and Influence People is not just a well-written book, it’s filled with quite a lot of advice. You can probably find this information in a “TL;DR” format somewhere on the Internet. But, I found the accompanying stories that Carnegie wrote were helpful for me personally to understand the situation of when to use his tips and how. I’m not saying I didn’t know all the hints he gave beforehand. I’m just saying he reinforced my beliefs of how we should treat each other. I’m glad I read this book, and I hope others do too that need a little bit of motivation/push to improve their influence/be genuine.
As with most things, there are downsides, and there are upsides. Well, I thought some of the examples didn’t quite match up to the point Carnegie was trying to get across. I also thought there’d be more sort-of how-to rather than “this is what I did”. But, all in all, I rather enjoyed the book and can’t fault much. I don’t think I’m going to be a whizz winning friends or influencing people soon, but I hope to use the qualities and will refer to the book in the future if I get lost.
My recommendation is that you go out and buy this book. Well, again, if you’re the type of person who doesn’t like stories about what this person did and the result was that, then you may want to pass on it. However, I give it a solid thumbs up and that’s why I’ve given it a four stars. Please don’t use these techniques to make underhanded deals or shady/dodgy business. Be genuine. Be kind. Give praise where deserved.
